EDCI 337 Group Chapter Remix

Our group has concluded that chapter 10 from The Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning: The Redundancy Principle, will be the subject of our “Chapter Remix” for EDCI 337. We cooperatively came to this decision during a zoom meeting in which we discussed the different principles covered in Mayer’s text. During the meeting, we developed a simple rubric on how to evaluate which chapter we wanted to focus on for our assignment. We collaboratively decided that our decision would be based on the following criteria:

  1. What topic was the most interesting?
  2. What topic was the most novel to us? I.e. something we never considered/ knew.
  3. What topic was the most applicable to our pedagogies?
  4. What item would be able to accommodate various multimedia tools into our blog?

After deciding on the chapter, we talked about how to format our blog. After a very stimulating conversation, we decided to use the same headings in our post that the authors did in our textbook, which are as follows:

Introduction/What is the Redundancy Principle

Evidence Obtained Outside of Cognitive load Theory

Picture/Text Redundancy

Redundancy of Actual Equipment

Written/Spoken Text Redundancy

Second Language Learning

The Relation of the Redundancy Principle to other Cognitive Load Principles

Instructional Implications of the Redundancy Principle

Since there were eight headings, we chose to have each member of our group complete a summary of two of the headings.

Alongside our summaries, we also will have multimedia components contained within our post. Our group created a shared google doc so that all members could monitor our progress and ideas.

Overall, the group experience has been a positive one, and I hope that you check out our final product next week!
